Rusatom Overseas (a company within the Rosatom Group) and Jordan Atomic Energy Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) technology.

According to the MoU, the Parties have agreed on a technology assessment and a potential for the preparation of a feasibility study conducted for the construction of a Russian-designed SMR-based power plant in Jordan.

“Russia and Jordan have been working together in the sphere of nuclear technologies for a long time. The Memorandum of Understanding on SMR will enhance and strengthen our cooperation. Rosatom, for its part, is prepared to provide its expertise in the sphere of SMR”, – stressed Evgeny Pakermanov President of Rusatom Overseas stressed.

Dr.  Khaled Toukan said:  “The SMR programme is a key pillar  in the nuclear strategy in Jordan. JAEC and RAOS have achieved many tangible milestones in their long cooperation and this MoU will further  enrich the  SMR programme“.

For reference:

In 2019, Rosatom State Corporation will start up a floating nuclear power plant, the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, which is the first reference project for NPPs of this type in the world. At the moment, Rosatom State Corporation is actively developing the Russian-designed land-based SMR NPP. One of the main features of such NPPs, in addition to their modular nature, is its multi-purpose use – the Russian-designed SMR NPPs can also be used for desalination and heat generation.

Russia and Jordan have been cooperating in the sphere of nuclear technologies since 2011 when theJordan Atomic Energy Commission opened a tender for construction of the first NPP in Jordan and invited Rosatom State Corporation to participate in it. In the end of 2013 the Jordan party notified the Russian party that Atomstroyexport, which had proposed to build two power units of 1000 MW each, was chosen to be the preferred vendor.

On March 24, 2015 the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on Cooperation Concerning the Construction and Operation of a Nuclear Power Plant on the Territory of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was signed.
